The challenge
Chanelle de Haan spent 18 years running her own accounting practice, managing hundreds of clients, in her own words, “with crossed fingers”, using Excel spreadsheets. That meant multiple versions of the same file circulating between herself and her staff, no reliable way to see what had actually been done versus what was still outstanding, and constant exposure to SARS and CIPC deadlines that carry real penalties when they slip.
That risk stopped being theoretical the day a staff member saved over the wrong file and a batch of client records was lost. As a SAIPA-registered tax practitioner running a business built on client trust, Chanelle knew tools that weren’t built for accountants were never going to let her practice scale, or let her stay sane while it did.
What we built
Working directly with Chanelle, we built Tax Trove around how a South African accounting practice actually operates: centralized client records, task assignment and delegation so nobody has to ask “did we do EMP501 for this one yet?”, deadline tracking for compliance work, and a client import wizard so a practice can move its existing book of business in without a manual re-entry slog.
Chanelle was involved at every stage, not just at kickoff and handover, because the platform had to match the actual shape of a tax practice: how work gets triaged, what a deadline means in a compliance context, and what a practitioner needs in front of them mid-task with a client on the phone.
The outcome
Tax Trove now runs 400+ clients through the platform for Chanelle’s own practice, with the same team that used to manage 350 through spreadsheets, and admin time is down 50%. The practice has grown 20% since launch.
What started as one practitioner’s internal fix has since grown into a product other South African accounting firms pay to run on, with independent testimonials from practices like Robinson Accounting Solutions and DEM Chartered Accountants Inc. describing the same shift Chanelle made: from scattered, colour-coded spreadsheets to one system they trust. That’s the clearest evidence a build actually solved the underlying problem, it didn’t stay a one-off internal tool. It became something worth putting in front of every other practitioner living the same daily chaos.
